About Prof. Petr KABELE

Petr Kabele is an Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanics of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. As a recipient of the Monbusho Scholarship of the Japanese Ministry of Education, he received his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Tokyo in 1992 and 1995, respectively. Until 1999 he served as a faculty member at the University of Tokyo (Associate Professor since 1998). In 1998 he lectured as a visiting faculty at the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology, Thammasat University in Thailand. Since 1999 he has been working at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, CTU in Prague. His research interests include advanced numerical modeling and analysis of building materials and structures. Recently, he has been the principal investigator of research projects “Computational modeling and analysis of progressive collapse”, “Micromechanical analysis and modeling of compressive fracture in fiber reinforced cementitious composites”, “Assessment of durability of Engineered Cementitious Composites based on study and modeling of their microstructure”, and “Damage analysis of reinforced concrete structures due to high temperatures”. He is a member of JSCE and RILEM, where he actively participates in the work of Technical Committee 208-HFC. Presently he supervises 3 Ph.D. students and co-supervises another 3.

Being the direct successor of the Professional Engineering School established in 1707, the present Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU) is the oldest engineering school in Central Europe. Nowadays, with total enrolment of over 24 thousand students and over 3 thousand members of academic and professional staff, CTU is the largest technical university in the Czech Republic. CTU consists of 7 faculties (Faculty of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering, Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Transportation Sciences, Faculty of Biomedical Engineering), 3 Higher Education Institutes (Klokner Institute, Masaryk Institute of Advanced Studies, Institute of Physical Education and Sport) and several other constituent parts. The university and its faculties offer higher engineering education and are accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to award Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in specified areas. The university offers 98 study programs taught in English. In 2007, there were over 2 thousand foreign students enrolled at CTU and the number of foreign students continuously increases. The international environment at the university is also supported by the International Students Club, whose main activity is to assist foreign students with everyday life and integration to the Czech environment.

The CTU lecturers participating in the Advanced Master’s belong mostly to the Department of Mechanics, Department of Steel and Timber Structures, Department of Concrete and Masonry Structures, and Department of Building Structures of the Faculty of Civil Engineering. They are experts in advanced numerical modeling and analysis of materials and structures, design, investigation, analysis, and evaluation of metal, timber, concrete and masonry structures. They are extensively involved both in theoretical research and engineering practice as consultants and expert advisors.
